Imigrante foi o último projeto gestado durante o período de sete anos em que André Penteado morou em Londres. Neste projeto o artista busca investigar questões relativas ao impacto psicológico que imigrantes sofrem por conta de seu deslocamento e, sobre tudo, a noção de que para sobreviver em uma cultura estranha eles criam ações para minimizar o stress que sentem, como: frequentar lugares que agrupam seus conterrâneos e oferecem a sua culinária, música, costumes, visitar seu país de origem com regularidade, etc.
Como parte de sua pesquisa, Penteado foi a Kew Gardens – o jardim botânico de Londres – onde descobriu um fato inusitado: suas estufas de plantas tropicais são visitadas constantemente por imigrantes originários de países quentes, principalmente paquistaneses e indianos, que lá vão em busca da sensação física das terras que deixaram para trás. Aqueles microclimas, criados e mantidos artificialmente, funcionam como “bolhas protetoras” e são catalizadores de afetos negligenciados pela atual condição destas pessoas. Foi esta descoberta que impulsionou a criação das três séries fotográficas, do vídeo e da animação que compõem este projeto.
A série Em casa é um ensaio contendo vistas do interior das duas das estufas tropicais de Kew Gardens, onde acima ou atrás das plantas sempre se vê as paredes e telhados de vidro destes espaços. Em Plantas Brasileiras, Penteado cataloga as plantas brasileiras que conseguiu identificar no interior das estufas. Junto com as imagens o artista exibe as fichas catalográficas destas plantas pertencentes ao banco de dados da instituição, traçando, assim, um paralelo com os protocolos e processos atravessados pelos imigrantes no seu périplo. Os outros, é uma série em preto e branco que apresenta troncos de árvores de clima frio e que, no conjunto da exposição, formula um contraponto, apontando para a forma como tanto grupos pertencentes aos imigrantes quanto àqueles pertencentes aos países hospedeiros tendem a considerar a cultura do outro como “estranha”, “diferente”, “incompreensível”. A jornada é um vídeo multicanal de 53’ de duração no qual o artista reflete sobre a intimidade como intervalo de consciência entre os tempos cronológico, da memória e dos afetos. A animação A troca apresenta no percurso de uma hora as possíveis substituições e combinações de cores entre as bandeiras do Reino Unido e do Brasil. Por último, o livreto, Psicologia da Imigração – Referências contém, sem buscar formar um conjunto coerente ou educativo, parte do material de pesquisa teórica utilizado na criação do projeto.

Imigrante (Immigrant) was the last project created during the seven-year period in which André Penteado lived in London. In this project, the artist seeks to investigate issues relating to the psychological impact that immigrants suffer as a result of their displacement and, above all, the notion that in order to survive in a strange culture they create actions to minimise the stress they feel, such as: frequenting places that bring their countrymen together and offer their cuisine, music, customs, visiting their country of origin regularly, etc.
As part of his research, Penteado went to Kew Gardens – London’s botanical garden – where he discovered an unusual fact: its greenhouses of tropical plants are constantly visited by immigrants from hot countries, mainly Pakistanis and Indians, who go there in search of the physical sensation of the lands they left behind. Those microclimates, artificially created and maintained, act as “protective bubbles” and are catalysts for affections neglected by these people’s current condition. It was this discovery that spurred the creation of the three photographic series, video and animation that make up this project.
The series Em casa (At Home) is an essay containing views of the interior of two of Kew Gardens’ tropical glasshouses, where above or behind the plants you can always see the glass walls and roofs of these spaces. In Plantas Brasileiras (Brazilian Plants), Penteado catalogues the Brazilian plants he was able to identify inside the glasshouses. Alongside the images, the artist displays the cataloguing sheets of these plants that belong to the institution’s database, thus drawing a parallel with the protocols and processes that the immigrants went through on their journey. Os outros (The others) is a black and white series featuring tree trunks from cold climates which, as part of the exhibition as a whole, provides a counterpoint, pointing to the way in which both immigrant groups and those belonging to host countries tend to consider the other’s culture as “strange”, “different”, “incomprehensible”. A jornada (The Journey) is a 53-minute multichannel video in which the artist reflects on intimacy as an interval of consciousness between chronological, memory and affective times. The animation A troca (The exchange) shows the possible substitutions and colour combinations between the flags of the United Kingdom and Brazil over the course of an hour. Finally, the booklet, Psicologia da Imigração – Referências (Psychology of Immigration – References) contains, without trying to form a coherent or educational whole, some of the theoretical research material used to create the project.
